Duncan Scott - Scottish Short Course Nationals 2013

Duncan Scott of Grangemouth ASC competed at the recent Scottish National Short Course Open Championships at the Royal Commonwealth pool in Edinburgh. He is part of FIRST (Falkirk Integrated Regional Swim Team) and has a swimming scholarship to Strathallan in Perthshire.

Day 1 He was up early, warm up and then the action started at 8.45. He had broken the 50 Freestyle Scottish Junior record whilst at the Grand Prix in Inverness in November, but improved on that with 23.09 to make the B final. He then swam a 200m Backstroke followed by the 400 Freestyle. He broke the junior record with 3.55.29. and had the time to make the B final.

Finals at night saw him smash his Junior record again with a time of 22.85 in the 50 Free and he repeated his record form in the 400 Freestyle with an improvement of his morning record with a 3.53.57

Day 2 Saturday 14th and he started with the 200IM, an event he already holds the Scottish Junior Record, and is ranked no 1 in Europe at Long Course. He had the time for the B final. He then swam a 2.04.00 in the 200 Butterfly with a time for the B final too. His last event of the morning was the 100 Freestyle. Like the 50 Free he had broken this Scottish Junior record in Inverness, and like the 50 Free he improved that time in the heats with a 49.47. At 16 he was the youngest qualifier for the A final.

Finals, and he won the B final with a creditable 2.02.27. He didn’t swim the 200 Fly but saved his energy for the 100 Freestyle A final. Although outside his Scottish record it was an experience for the future. He then was on the podium for his fourth Junior title of the meet.

Day 3 Heats in the morning for the gruelling 400IM. Duncan was the fastest qualifier for the B final with 4.22.0o, just outside his Scottish junior record set in Inverness with 4.17.18. He then had the 200 freestyle and loo and behold another Scottish Junior record, beating his record in Inverness of 1.48.40 with a 1.48.02. He made the A final and was again swimming with the big boys

Finals He won the B final with an improvement on the morning heats and a super 4.20.03. in his 400IM. Duncan’s 200 Free was a sound 1.49.79. For the last solo swim of the meet and in the wash from swimmers like Robbie Renwick he did remarkedly well. H

The weekend was finished off with 6 Scottish Junior Titles the Scottish Short Course Championship Trophy for the outstanding male swimmer of the meet. His name will now join legends like David Wilkie, Ian Edmond and David Carry. Now for 2014.

Apr 2018

The Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast was the focus for April. Duncan left Scotland in the middle of March for a couple of weeks in a holding camp in Brisbane. After a delay due to illness Duncan joined the team in the commonwealth games village. The Games opened on the 4th. Swimmers don’t go to the opening ceremony as they compete the following day. Mar 2018

The snow for the Edinburgh International / British Championships meant the crowd was smaller than usual but the swimmers were there. They were conscious of the Australian trials for the Commonwealth Games taking place on the other side of the world. He swam the four disciplines of an IM – all looking good. Feb 2018

The main competition for February was BUCs (British Universities and Colleges Sport) He broke the 200 Free record and the Stirling team won the 4 x 100 in a new record time. He had a healthy time for the 200IM final too.

Jan 2018

Duncan spent several weeks in Perth Western Australia with Scottish team mates enjoying winter sun. They returned late January and were off to Luxembourg for the Euro Meet 26th-28th January. Duncan swam 49.51 in the 100 Free A final – finishing 4th He didn’t make the A final in the 200Free but swam faster than the A final Gold medalist with a 1.47.87 – a stunning time for the part of the year. He took silver in the 200 IM with 2.00.74. A great start to the New Year.

Dec 2017

A busy month competitions in Edinburgh and Copenhagen. Duncan took the 200IM title. He rested from a variety of swims knowing he had the Europeans a few days later. When you aren’t 100%, you know it. Duncan joined the 9 swimmers of the British team in Copenhagen for his first International Short Course competition. Day 2 he swam in the 200 Free. Nov 2017

Duncan is an ambassador for Scottish water and regularly appears at swimming pools to encourage children to swim. He appeared in the Scottish parliament to speak re the learn to swim programmes. We must not forget BUCs ( British Universities Short Course Competition) in Sheffield.

Oct 2017

Announcement by British Swimming of those athletes to gain lottery funding for 2017/18. Duncan has again been fortunate to secure lottery funding. Duncan spent some of October in Flagstaff before returning to the UK. Team GB for European Short Course announced.

Sep 2017

Award season The night of the 21/9/17 Duncan was through in Edinburgh to the EICC for the Team Scotland awards. We were delighted that sister Alexandria accompanied him.He was up against tough completion with Andy Murray, Calum Hawkins and Josh Taylor but the swimmer won the Male athlete of the year. Worlds Budapest Duncan swam at the British Championships in Sheffield in April and secured a place in the British team by swimming a new British record in the 100 Freestyle. His time had him ranked fastest in the world in 2017. (47.90) Duncan had a busy week starting on Monday 24th with the 200 Freestyle heats and semis in the evening.
