The 2016 Games opened on the 5th August, and by Sunday 7th Adam Peaty had broken his world record and won gold in the 100m Breastroke. Team mate Jazz Carlin had also bagged silver.
August 9th
Duncan’s Olympics started two days later.
Buoyed by those fantastic wins he broke his own personal best, the Scottish record and British record to secure a place in the 100 Freestyle Semi - finals.
Later that session he swam final leg in the 4 x 200 freestyle relay with all his team mates from the 4 x 200 Commonwealth Games silver medal winning Scottish team of 2014. They won their heat breaking the Scottish record (4.06.31) and were fastest into the final. All knew the team would change for the evening finals bringing in James Guy.
The evening session started with Duncan racing for a place in the 100 free final. He made it. An extraordinary accomplishment making him the first British swimmer in a 100 Freestyle final since 1968.
The final for the 4 x 200 was stunning. Stephen Milne led off, followed by Duncan then Dan Wallace and James Guy in the final leg. They finished in 4.03.13 James was the second fastest swimmer of the race and Duncan the third. Fantastic. They finished second and were on the podium next to Phelps and Lochte – any swimmers dream.
August 10
Duncan’s first Olympic final. Incredible. He swam a time equal to his British record and secured a fantastic 5th position. He was lying 8th on the turn but turned his speed on for the final 50m. That return was the third fastest. Lots more to come.
August 12th
Duncan swam the freestyle leg of the 4 x 100 medley. The great times posted by Chris Walker Hebborn Adam Peaty and James Guy meant they finished fastest and therefore had pole position for the final.
August 13th
Team GB made no changes, but the USA team did. Team USA set off so quickly their backstroker broke an Olympic record for 100 Back. Their team broke the Olympic record with 3.27.95. the young British squad came in second with 3.29.24.
